Step-by-Step Guide to Run a Time Audit

  1. Commit: I'm not going to lie. If you're not used to it, tracking your time could be a little annoying. I can tell you from experience, it takes discipline to step back from your work and ask yourself, "Hey, what am I actually doing right now."  The truth is, taking stock of your daily tasks is the best way to optimize your time.  And most of us fly through the day like zombies.  running from one thing to the next. So, the first step is to commit to the process. It will be worthwhile.
  2. Create your Time Tracker: You can use a Google sheet or good old fashion pen and paper.  Lay out each day of the week and plug in the times when you start working and when you finish. Leave some space for you to record your activity and viola! You have your template for tracking your time.  There are also tons of templates online. Find one that speaks to you.
  3. Track one week: Track a full week of work and be very consistent and detailed using your time tracker.  Plug in times you take breaks and eat lunch along with moments you are distracted or thrown off by unexpected requests or happenings.  Get the full picture.
  4. Analysis: Review your week.  I bet you'll be surprised by when you find it. Once you have a clear picture of what takes up your time, you'll be about to organize your workload better.
  5. Batch-like-with-like:  life becomes more effective and your work quality is stronger when you aren't constantly context-switching.  Batching your work into themed hours or days will help you to knock out projects more quickly and allow you to be more intentional in designing your day-- rather than being reactive.

There you have it folks. A simple guide to running a time audit for yourself. Now go forth and conquer your schedules like a boss. And if all else fails, just remember, there's always tomorrow. Or the next day. Or the day after that. Time is a fickle mistress...
